As some may know, I would like to open a publishing house and I have also written what I would like it to be. Obviously there's no talk about it for now, but I wanted to interview Giordana, from the Plesio publishing house , who someone knows both because she frequents Penna blu and because she reads her blog Gli notebook di Mur , to understand what steps to take to open one and how to manage it. I then asked her some targeted questions, which any layman would ask, the first that came to mind when thinking about the information I would like to know if I were to open a publishing house myself. I want to open a publishing house: what steps should I take first? I read that there are courses for editors - which are also expensive, something like 2000 euros. Do you consider them fundamental? Hi Daniele, and thanks for thinking of me.
I don't want to disappoint anyone, but the paths that lead to opening a publishing house are so varied that it is difficult to answer your questions objectively. However, I hope that my "subjective" answer, based on the experience of Plesio Editore, will also be appreciated. As far as I'm concerned, I can say that it wasn't necessary to attend any technical Special Data courses of an administrative nature. For all the bureaucratic aspect, the only advice I can give, before even thinking about any training costs, is to find a good accountant. Only a good accountant can advise you based on your situation and your needs, helping you to compile a truthful statement that analyzes the earning possibilities and, consequently, helps you plan the initial expenses, including training (which I obviously recommend) . I suggest thinking about a good advanced editing course.
It isn't much though, and at the first hint of growth in the business you will realize that the skills to be acquired (or for your collaborators to acquire) increase exponentially with the number of volumes. In reality, so much depends on the previous training of the collaborators, so it is difficult to say that yes, this or that type of course is definitely needed. Without a doubt, behind an acceptable book you need: editing, proofreading , layout and graphics skills. However, I don't see many acceptable books in small publishers, even where the intentions are the best. Often many problems can only be solved with time. How to search for editorial staff? A publishing house needs, at a minimum, an editor and a managing director. At the beginning, which figures are necessary and how to find them? Who will be willing to work for a publishing house that has not yet invoiced? The indispensable figures are the editor, the proofreader, the graphic designer and the layout designer.
